About us 🌱

At HandsOn OT, we provide peadiatric occupational therapy services in the leafy suburbs of Cape Town, with a special interest is Ayres Sensory Integration and Neuro-Developmental Therapy. We use a child-centered approach, allowing the child to play an active role in guiding their intervention process. This approach helps us identify your child's strengths and difficulties, using a combination of standardized and non-standardized assessments.

We believe in focusing on and nurturing each child's strengths, which can help them overcome learning barriers and enable them to explore their environment with confidence and comfort.  Our therapy techniques are tailored to each child's unique needs.

We maintain open and ongoing communication with parents and  guardians to ensure we are aligned on your child’s progress and goals. Our evidence-based approach ensures the best care and encourages teamwork with everyone involved in your child’s learning and development.

The OT Process 🌱

We offer a free 20-minute online consultation to understand your child's strengths and any concerns you may have. This discussion helps determine whether occupational therapy is the right option for your child. If your child has been referred for therapy, our experienced therapists will explain how it can benefit their development and guide you through the next steps. If occupational therapy is not the best starting point, we will help you find the right professional for your child’s needs.

If occupational therapy is the right choice, we will move forward with the following process.

Initial Interview

In the initial interview, we collect important information about your child’s medical, birth, developmental, and sensory-motor history. We also discuss any concerns you or your child’s teacher may have. This meeting lasts between 45 minutes to 1 hour, and your child does not attend the meeting.

Classroom Observation

If necessary, we will observe your child in their classroom to understand how they interact with their environment. We may also speak with the teacher and other professionals working with your child.

Comprehensive Evaluation

We will conduct a detailed assessment of your child’s strengths and areas that may need support using standard tests and observations. The assessment looks at sensory processing, motor skills (both large and small movements), and visual-perceptual abilities. Although the process may be challenging, children usually enjoy the fun, child-focused activities. The assessment lasts between 2 and 3.5 hours and will take place during the school day.

Detailed Feedback

After the assessment, we provide verbal feedback to parents, explaining your child’s strengths, concerns, and our recommendations. You will also receive a written report based on the assessment findings. The feedback session lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour, and we encourage both parents to attend.

In line with the Ethical Rules of the Board of Healthcare Funders, a copy of the report will be sent to your child’s doctor. If we don’t receive any instructions otherwise, we will also send a copy to your child’s school. If occupational therapy is needed, we will arrange the session times during the feedback meeting.

Testimonials 🌱

Mon is incredibly passionate about occupational therapy, and her dedication to the children and families she works with is truly remarkable. As a family, we were initially shocked when we were told our 5-year-old daughter (pre-grade R) needed OT, as we had not noticed any developmental concerns. Though we were hesitant and anxious, Mon came highly recommended by our daughter’s teacher.

From the start, she welcomed us with open arms and worked closely with us to create an OT programme that not only highlighted our daughter’s strengths but also involved our entire family, ensuring we were all part of the journey. A few months later, the results speak for themselves, our daughter is thriving, and the progress is clear both at home and at school!

I enlisted Mon's service as OT after my daughter had been diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 8 years. Mon came highly recommended and I can clearly see why. The total change in Zoe is commendable to say the least in a very short period of time. She has gone from scramble eggs to finely poached. Suddenly her work is neater, structured, and she is more focused on tasks. The results show!

Zoe got 2 higher codes in her school report. She loves OT and often does not want to leave after her OT session. I am very grateful. Thank you Mon for all your effort and always going the extra mile. This road can often be empty because nobody chooses to walk it .. but you do .. thank you. I look forward to seeing Zoe's progress grow even further.

Monique has been seeing my son from the age of 4yrs old for various reasons. He loves attending OT, and he is visibly more regulated for days after a session. Her feedback after each session is timeous and thorough. Very happy with the intervention and support received!
